VFX Supervisor Jennifer Meire IWD Q&A

Jennifer Meire joined Cinesite’s growing team of female VFX Supervisors in late 2021. As part of International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8th March 2023, we asked her a few questions.

To start, can you tell us a little about your background and how you got into the visual effects industry?
I was born and raised in Italy and I have been surrounded by art all my life. Both sides of my family were artists, painters or animators. I studied Fine Arts and, at the same time, worked as a photographer for a large Italian advertising agency. In the ’90s, I moved to London, mostly working for commercials as an Inferno artist. After working as a freelancer for The Mill for a few commercials and projects, I was offered work as a VFX supervisor on several of The Mill television’s series for BBC and Sky One. Since I joined Cinesite in 2021, I have been VFX Supervisor and delivered work on Ticket to Paradise and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, nominated for best visual effects at Academy Award 2023.

Did you always have a clear idea of what career you wanted?
When I was young, I was motivated more by math and science, so I wanted to be a mad scientist!  But life brought me closer to the more visual, creative world during my teenage years. I was fascinated by the way I could create something from nothing and how I could manipulate images to tell a story.

As a woman, what challenges have you overcome in your career?
I haven’t faced many challenges in my career as a woman, but I did have to work hard to prove myself and my capabilities. I had to be confident in my abilities and not let any gender stereotypes or biases stand in my way. I also had to be willing to take risks and put myself out there, even if it meant going against the grain. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made and the successes I’ve achieved, and I’m grateful for the support of those around me, women and men, who have helped me along the way.

What does power mean to you?
Power to me is not the ability to influence and control actions but rather the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of others. It is the ability to shape your own destiny and bring positive changes in the world.

What advice would you give to women who are just starting out in their careers, who might want to get into VFX or post-production?
My advice to women starting out in VFX or post-production is to be confident in your abilities and rely on your skills. It can be intimidating to step into new territory, but don’t let that stop you from pursuing your dreams. Networking is also key, so make sure you reach out to people in the industry and build relationships. Finally, stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies so you can stay ahead of the curve.

Which women inspire you the most?
Marie Curie, who had the courage to swim against the current and made a breakthrough scientific discovery.
