PRINTWORKS CORAL REEF
CASE STUDY

Following the successful launch of their holiday campaign featuring a friendly Santa in December 2025, the Cinesite Immersive team has returned to Printworks Manchester to deliver a second visual experience. Debuting in September 2026, this latest installation trades winter magic for an underwater escape, transforming Europe’s largest indoor digital ceiling — a massive 1,000m² LED canvas — into a thriving coral reef.

The Canvas & Challenge

Printworks’ digital canopy presents a unique creative and technical canvas. Stretching high above the retail and entertainment concourse, the curved, long-corridor setup requires content designed specifically for ceiling-oriented viewing angles. Following up on their inaugural festive installation, Cinesite was tasked with crafting a summer experience that would capture visitor attention, extend dwell time, and maximise the spatial illusion of the overhead environment.

Creative Inspiration & Visual Design

The creative direction took its cues from large public aquariums, prioritising fun, uplifting energy over strict realism. Drawing on the way aquariums use pink and blue display lighting to elevate the visitor experience, the team pushed the colour palette into a vibrant, hyper-colourful world. The brief was simple: give people stepping in from a grey, rainy Manchester day an instant reason to look up and smile.

High-resolution textures, rich coral tones, and carefully tuned caustic light patterns ripple across the reef, designed to make visitors feel truly submerged without tipping into a murky or foggy scene.

Designing the Ecosystem

The resulting visual experience brings a vibrant marine world directly above the heads of shoppers and diners:

  • Underwater Landscape: The scene is anchored by an expansive coral reef canyon populated with colourful anemones, sea flora, and light shafts filtering down from the ocean surface.
  • Ocean Megafauna: Massive orcas and giant manta rays sweep gracefully across the screen, utilising 3D perspective mapping to create a strong illusion of depth and scale directly overhead.
  • Marine Life: The environment features a varied ocean ecosystem, including gliding sharks, playful dolphins, pulsing jellyfish, and dense, synchronised shoals of fish moving along natural swimming channels.
  • Playful Details: Alongside the majestic megafauna, an exploratory little submarine cruises across the digital canopy, adding a touch of storytelling whimsy to the scene.

Technical Execution & Real-Time Pipeline

To achieve a convincing sense of underwater immersion at scale, Cinesite’s creative team leveraged advanced fluid dynamics and lighting simulations tailored for the physical venue. To deliver that scale quickly and cost-effectively, the production was built entirely within Unreal Engine, using real-time rendering and existing assets to hit a specific price point.

The environment itself was constructed in record time using a mix of kitbashed coral assets and Niagara particle systems. By pairing Niagara mesh renderers with fish-swarm Blueprints and autonomous flocking behaviours, thousands of schooling fish move with fluid, organic motion straight out of the box.

Because the curved 1,000m² LED ceiling demands very specific sightlines, perspective mapping was essential to the project’s success. The team built a real-time, to-scale 3D mock-up of the Printworks concourse inside Unreal Engine, allowing artists to virtually walk the floor and preview viewing angles before ever deploying on-site. This eliminated guesswork, ensured flawless spatial alignment, and removed the need for costly on-site re-renders.

The spatial arrangement of the marine life was engineered to look natural from multiple vantage points on the venue floor below, ensuring that visitors moving through the corridor experience continuous, fluid motion regardless of where they are standing.

“Moving from the Santa edition to Coral Reef shifted our technical strategy entirely,” explains Chris Fitzpatrick, Head of Immersive. “The holiday visuals delivered in 2025 utilised generative AI to achieve character performance and precise timing within budget constraints that CGI couldn’t match. Transitioning to Coral Reef, we pivoted to Unreal Engine, leveraging real-time rendering and existing assets to deliver ambient, immersion-driven visuals at a specific price point. The key takeaway was matching the tool to the concept: using AI when unique narrative control is essential, and real-time 3D environments when efficiency and scale take priority.”

The Visitor Experience

By converting architectural overhead LED space into a dynamic ocean sanctuary, the installation creates a shared moment of wonder for venue visitors. The project reinforces Printworks’ position as a leading digital destination and underscores Cinesite Immersive’s capability in creating tailored, large-scale visual installations for location-based entertainment.
