Véronique Tassart Joins BCTQ Board to Advocate for Quebec Animation
At Cinesite, we’re proud to announce that Véronique Tassart, our Director of M&A Integration, has joined the Board of Directors of the Bureau du cinéma et de la télévision du Québec (BCTQ) for animation. In this role, she will help represent Quebec’s animation industry, advocate for key challenges, and promote the talent that makes our province a global leader in VFX and animation.
We took a moment to ask Véronique about her motivations, the challenges facing the industry, and her vision for Quebec’s role on the international stage. The Q&A follows below.
Q&A with Véronique Tassart
What inspired you to join the BCTQ Board?
The BCTQ plays a key role in our industry, both in visual effects and animation. This is an opportunity for me—and for Cinesite—to have an official voice to represent our industry within the audiovisual cluster and to third parties.
What do you see as the main challenges facing our industry today?
There are several pressing challenges. On a global scale, we’re seeing a decline in the number of new projects. Locally, the reduction of tax credits in Quebec is having a real impact. Together, these create pressure on our teams and studios across the province.
The recent Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes caused a significant slowdown in production, leading to a decrease in demand for VFX and animation services. This exacerbated the already difficult situation for Quebec studios.
The Quebec government revised its tax credit system, increasing the base rate from 20% to 25% but simultaneously imposing a 65% cap on eligible expenses for animation and VFX productions. Previously, all eligible labor costs were covered. This has made Quebec significantly less attractive to international studios, as it effectively means a substantial cut (around 28%) in the tax incentives.
What does it mean for Cinesite to have a representative on the BCTQ Board?
It allows us to contribute to important conversations shaping the future of our industry. It also reinforces Cinesite’s commitment to being part of the collective efforts that support and strengthen the local creative ecosystem.
In your view, what should the BCTQ’s priorities be for the coming year?
Improving communication with the government about our industry’s challenges—and the solutions we propose—should remain a top priority. We also need to amplify the visibility of the incredible projects our artists are working on, many of which go unrecognized here in Quebec.
How do you see Quebec’s role evolving on the international stage in VFX and animation?
The talent in Quebec is undeniable. It will continue to position our province as a key international player in both VFX and animation. But we need to ensure we’re actively showcasing that talent—at home and abroad.”
