Rich has worked extensively in motion capture for over ten years, ultimately becoming Head of Physical Production at Imaginarium Studios in 2017. He has played an integral part in larger scale projects and continues to lead with his valuable knowledge and expertise.
Rich is highly involved in early discussions with clients, helping them to understand what motion capture aspects will be achievable (including breaking down scripts) and is responsible for designing and building motion capture volumes, tailoring them to each production. He also acts as an Assistant Director on set, supporting clients and helping performers achieve their strongest performance. Rich shares that, “Having a well built volume is essential for the project running smoothly. A well structured volume not only means a smooth shoot but also smooth post.”
Rich found his ultimate passion in the tech side of filming by gaining early experience as a runner, data wrangler and stage manager. His prowess in his current role as Head of Physical Production has been showcased in films such as Snow White (2024) where he designed and built one of the largest motion capture volumes in the UK.
While working on the Marvel Television miniseries She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022), Rich was in charge of training a new Imaginarium Studios team in Atlanta to ensure the project ran smoothly. Netflix’s Dance Monsters (2022), a popular series which sees amateur dancers disguised as CGI avatars, is another example of the drive and capabilities of motion capture Rich has been a part of, and is enthusiastic to continue exploring into the future.
Actively working on video games in his line of work, including Cyberpunk 2077, Rich remains an avid gamer in his spare time, helping to run gaming forums.
